Two months away from the Feb. 17 end of full-power analog TV, stations in some 42 states and Washington, D.C., are conducting simulated analog shutoffs to test viewers’ preparation for the transition.
Most tests will last from one to five minutes, according to NAB, with many during evening newscasts. New York, for example, is running five-minute tests at the high-traffic 7:30 p.m. slot.
In the tests, stations will broadcast information about the transition in case of regular programming on their analog channels.
Broadcasters will use statewide phone banks, with some hosting their own call centers.
“These readiness tests are a great innovation by broadcasters that brings information about the transition to viewers who need it and gives DTV technology a trial run,” said Jonathan Collegio, NAB vice president for the DTV transition.”
He said an estimated 400 television stations across the country have already participated in DTV consumer readiness testing, including market-wide and statewide tests.
